The Sewing Machine, Its History And What Is Currently On The Market
In the days before the 1900s, women spent most of their hours during daylight sewing clothes for themselves as well as their families – by hand. Women also were the majority of the labor force sewing clothes in woven fabrics as well as in mills and factories. The invention as well as the spread of the sewing machine came to free women of this chore, liberating workers from long hours, poorly paid factories, and developed a wide assortment of less expensive clothes.
Industry Machine/Home Machine
The industrial sewing machine made an assortment of products possible and very affordable. Industrial sewing machines required cast iron for their frames and a variety of metals for the fittings. Steel, and brass as well as a number of alloys are needed in order to make specialized parts that are durable for long hours of use in conditions in the factory. Several manufacturers cast, machined and tooled their own metal parts; but vendors also supply these parts as well as electric, pneumatic, and electronic elements.
But let’s take a break from history and examine what is currently on the market.

Good features like a free arm and drop feed makes it versatile for all types of sewing. Lightweight and very easy to use, this is the best sewing machine for beginners and the price is just right.
This is a great modern-day equivalent to an older sewing machine, and is good for a young beginner who doesn’t need the advanced features some of the modern sewing machines have to offer.
Features of the Janome 2212 include:
- Dial pattern selection easy turn
- Folding carry handle
- 12 stitches build-in including a buttonhole 4-step
- Stitch width/length adjustment
- 110-volt machine, for use only in US
- Drop feed for free motion quilting and sewing
- Free arm
- Bobbin loads in front
- Manual tension control
- Speeds up to 860 spm Dial Pattern Selector
- Drop Feed Dog
- Manual Tension Control
- Snap-on presser feet
- Built-in Thread Cutter
- 12 stitches
- Zigzag Width Adjustment to 5mm
- 4-Step Buttonhole
- 2 Retractable, and Vertical Spool Pins
- Incandescent lamp
It has a vertical bobbin and while the trend right now is horizontal bobbins, there are some advantages to the vertical bobbin. It is really easy to clear thread jams, and can clear them without removing the project and many people prefer vertical bobbins when doing free motion quilting.
Good Price, Great for Beginning
This is an excellent entry level sewing machine that is priced very inexpensively. This machine is believed by most users to be great and does everything needed and does it well. Most of these machines have been used for years and still are doing well. It quilts great, hems jeans (with the help of a jean-a-ma-jig) there are many feet that are available for it is very inexpensive. For those who are new to sewing and wants a simple, reliable machine that will not give anyone a problem – this is it.
Today’s Home Machines
Unlike the industrial machines, the home sewing machine is great for its versatility, portability and flexibility. Lightweight housings are quite important and most home machines have casings made of plastics and polymers that are light, easy to mold, easy to clean, and resistant to cracking and chipping.
The frame of the home machine is made of injection-molded aluminum, again for considerations of weight. Other metals, such as copper, nickel and chrome are used to plate various parts.
Some home machines also have an electric motor, a variety of precision-machined metal parts including feed gears, cam mechanisms, needles, hooks, and the needle bar, presser feet and the main drive shaft. Circuit boards are required also to be specific to the main controls of the machine, the stitch and pattern selections and a range of other features. Motors, machined metal parts, and circuit boards can be supplied by vendors or made by the manufacturers.

This machine includes the low price, tons of features, easy to use, and snazzy new design. It also has many features that are run and monitored by a computer.
Many say that these machines have too many features on them. The wide variety of options and features may intimidate those not comfortable with computerized functions. But this can be fixed with lessons and practice.
Other complaints are that these machines are not durable, and wear out after only a few years and are unable to be repaired.
This computerized sewing machine made by Brothers has a huge number of computerized and non-computerize options that the public just marvels over. The only complaint was that there were too many options – that can scare someone who is not comfortable with any computerized equipment.
Not for Beginners – Lots of Features
Also this sewing machine is not the sewing machine that a beginner should start on as this machine is too complicated for many to use. Granted, some younger people would probably have fewer problems with the computer that helps run this machine. Perhaps this is one product that does not convert well to computers.
This isn’t your Grandmother’s Machine
The other opinion on this machine is that it is not durable – grandma’s old machine lasted forever. These are very hard to repair so they last for only several years. Also, the machine seems to be more for very large projects – such as quilts or drapes.
Sewing Machines for around $100
The art of choosing the best sewing machine for kids is really not that difficult, but what is important is to choose a sewing machine that is high quality or it will not last very long. Luckily, most kid’s sewing machines are made with quality material that will last for a great number of years and can be purchased for less than $100. Parents think that it does not make any sense to spend much more than that initially until you find out if the child’s interest in sewing machines is really genuine.
The first thing that needs to be considered is the ‘brand’. Is it one you have heard of before? Has this brand been around for a long time and has a proven record of longevity with products? Are most of their reviews good in general?
Now, let’s talk and look for ‘simplicity’. Children have a tendency to lose interest in new things quickly due to having attention spans that are short. And too many options to fiddle with on any sewing machine could turn them off. The basic things to look for in a machine’s description needs to include:
- Snap on presser feet
- Easy in threading needle and bobbin
- Low built-in stitch count – with no more than about 10
- Pedal for the foot
- 4 or 5 stars in user review
Keep in mind that these sewing machines are meant only for projects that are basic sewing to learn on such as simple garments or pillowcases. They are certainly not meant for quilting projects or items that use material that is heavier.
Sewing has a fairly long curve for learning and it is best for children to be able to operate the machine on their own and progress at their own pace. If your child’s interest is persistent (often times it is not) then they will eventually be ready for an up-grade in machines that are able to use for projects that are more complicated.
The following 2 machines are just perfect for kids who are beginning to use sewing machines and they are listed on Amazon with plenty of user reviews:

Embroidery and Sewing Machine
This Bernina 830 Embroidery and Sewing Machine is the one most people buy for its embroidery capabilities. Most people either love it or hate it – nothing in-between. The people who love it do so for the stitch quality. There is a build-in Dual Feed that is loved. The space between the needle and the machine is 12 inches measured diagonally so there is more maneuvering room than most embroidery machines.
Quick Stitch Designs online
There are many quick stitch embroidery designs online and they are used for quilting. These designs are often rework designs or often single run designs where the design is stitched with only a single pass of the thread and needle comprising the entire design. There are raves on how easily it is to do these designs with this sewing machine.
Embroidery Design and Quilting
It is used mostly for quick stitch embroidery designs and also quilting. Those who buy it for these reasons love it. If you are doing embroidery – this will stitch with only a single pass of the needle and thread to complete the entire design.
Juki HZL F600
This Juki HZL F600 is on a sewing machine which has many features such as making button holes and a few utility stitches. Plus this machine is very quiet so that you hardly know when it is being used.
- Free Arm
- Needle Threader that is automatic
- Direct Select Panel for Stitches
- Ten slots for memory with each holding up to 70 pattern
- 12mm Extra High Foot Lift
- 7-Pt Feed Dog
- Start/Stop Button
The other accessory that you might want to buy for this machine is what is called a “straight stitch” plate which is in the CAD and is in the $100.00 range.
Although this machine has automatic tension you also have the capability to adjust the tension yourself, and not just upper and bobbin tension but also at the presser foot as well. No other machines give you this ability. The presets didn’t always work but there was nothing you could not do with it. With the Juki HZL series, you have full control, if you want it.
The box feed works wonderfully, as it pulls the fabric evenly and true. With the edge stitching foot, you’re able to stitch close to the very edge of the fabric you are working on while seven feed dogs monitor the fabric. Jean’s hemming is not a problem with this machine when you are able to glide easily over seams that are large.
There is a knob which controls the stitch length located right beneath the numeric display of the stitch length, and the knob to display the stitch needle position/width is right under that display as well.
There's something to be said about having knobs, making it most like an old-fashioned machine, but it becomes more modern since there is the digital display.
Work like the one Grandmother had
This is a mechanical machine that works most like an old-fashioned machine. There are very few problems mentioned by buyers but they could not say enough good things about this sewing machine.
One customer mentions that she wished the letters were bigger. So as you can see there is very little that presented a problem. In fact, there is not much if anything wrong with this sewing machine.
It was very hard to find information on anything wrong or disliked about the sewing machine – there just isn’t anything that is wrong with this machine. Those using it for quilting believe that it is the very best machine for quilting and would not think of getting a different machine.
So, it is a good machine with very little problems and it is fairly inexpensive to buy. Even those who have more expensive machines or other brands that have been great – they still believe this is the perfect mechanical machine to have.
So given all this information, anyone should be able to go find a sewing machine that is right for them.
These are a few of the sewing machines that are currently used in families today. There also was a brief history of the change in lifestyle the sewing machine made when it was first built for home use.
